High School Diploma ProgramMountain View-Los Altos Union High School District offers a high school diploma program for persons 18 years of age and older who want to complete their high school credits. Students may choose to obtain a traditional, seat-time high school diploma class.++ In Independent Study, students are assigned a minimum of fifteen (15) hours of school work per week. They meet individually with their instructor at least one hour a week at regularly scheduled day or evening appointments to review and evaluate their work and to obtain new assignments.* Enrollment is open entry/open exit. G.E.D. Test Preparation ClassesIndividualized instruction, as well as group discussion, is offered to students in subjects such as literature, writing, math, social studies and science as they prepare to pass the series of five G.E.D. tests. The teachers provide a place to study and additional learning resources. Enrollment is open throughout the school year depending upon space availability. CAHSEE PreparationThis class is designed to assist students in reviewing basic language arts and computation skills in preparation to take the California High School Exit Examination. All students who receive a high school diploma are required to pass the CAHSEE in addition to completing course requirements. It is recommended that all high school diploma students take this course before taking the CAHSEE. You may take both classes concurrently. Young Parents Program (YPP)Pregnant? Parenting? Join other teens or young adults in finishing your high school diploma or preparing for the G.E.D. test. You may earn credits in child development or parenting while you complete your academic classes or obtain the skills you need to pass the G.E.D. Support groups meet weekly. On-site childcare for infants and toddlers is available on a limited basis for students attending the program. Enrollment is open entry/open exit. G.E.D. TestingThe Mountain View-Los Altos Adult School is an official G.E.D. Testing Center. The G.E.D. Testing Program offers adults an opportunity to demonstrate that they have acquired the skills required to obtain a G.E.D. certificate. The test is a norm-referenced battery of five comprehensive examinations in the areas of writing, social studies, science, literature and the arts, and mathematics. Each examination takes 1 to 2 hours. You must be at least 18 years of age without a U.S. high school diploma and not be enrolled in a secondary school.As of January 7, 2008, the G.E.D. testing fee is $105 CASH, Mastercard or Visa. This fee is NOT refundable or transferable. A current government-issued picture identification with birth date and signature is required each time you take a G.E.D. test. Tests are given Monday through Thursday evenings. To help ensure that you can test on a particular day, you should arrive at 5:30PM. First time test takers will need to attend an orientation session to complete a detailed demographic survey before they will be allowed to test. Call (650) 940-1333 for more information. Upon successful completion of the tests, a G.E.D. certificate will be issued by the State Department of Education. Special editions of the G.E.D. tests along with accommodations for testing candidates with documented physical and/or learning disabilities are available if requested.
